Western
Australia was first settled in Albany by Major Lockyer in 1826
and in Fremantle and Perth in 1829 by Captain James Stirling.
However
European contact with Western Australia commenced as early as
1616 by Dutch explorer Dirck Hartog at Shark Bay. Subsequent
Dutch explorers such as Houtman, Carstensz, Vlamingh added more
information about the new continent with Vlamingh discovering
the Swan River in 1696.
The second
half of the 18th Century saw the decline of the Dutch and the
rise of French exploration. St. Allouarn, D'Entrecasteaux,
Baudin, Freycinet and Dumont D'Urville all adding new
information regarding the coastline, the Aborigines, and the flora and fauna. |

However, it
was the English explorer Vancouver who discovered and charted
King George Sound in 1791. Further coastal exploration by
Flinders and later by Parker King completed the charting of the
Western Australia coastline.
